Funded by the Project HOMEKEY state program, this 3-story project will provide 40 units of much needed Permanent Supportive housing to the community of East Compton CA. The existing L-shaped motel, previously featuring stucco and wood construction will undergo a significant renovation.
With the creation of a communal outdoor space, through repurposing of the existing parking lot, a variety of engagement opportunities for residents will be created. The garden will feature a mix of vegetation and colorful hardscape pathways, feeding life into the space. Other aspects will include a significant shade structure with solar panels, repurposed seating, rain gardens to cleanse the soil, a play mound, and a dog run.
Each guest room will be upgraded to include a kitchenette, mid-size refrigerator, and built-in closets. Larger corner units will offer mobility-accessible living spaces and family accommodations. The old lobby will be transformed into supportive services space totaling 1,500 square feet, with a new admin area featuring a translucent polycarbonate corridor to create a brighter and more welcoming ground-floor environment.
Kadre Architects aimed to simplify the building’s design, removing unnecessary elements to highlight its primary features. The façade will be enhanced with a grid of perforated aluminum panels for passive cooling, allowing light to filter through beautifully. Impressively, the site is expected to generate most of its energy needs through solar power, with the entire project being 100% electric.
