The Van Nuys and Sun Valley Tiny Home Villages demonstrate how thoughtful design and an integrated design-build process can rapidly deliver dignified interim housing under extraordinary constraints. Together, the projects provide 311 beds for people experiencing homelessness and were designed, permitted, and constructed in just ten months.
Developed through close collaboration between the design build team and numerous City and County agencies, the projects transformed some of Los Angeles’ most challenging sites, parcels constrained by freeways, arterial roads, flood control channels, and critical infrastructure, into safe and welcoming communities. Early coordination, creative infrastructure solutions, and streamlined delivery were essential to making these sites buildable.
Working within modest budgets and an accelerated schedule, the design team focused on creating places rather than simply placing shelters. Fire access roads became shared community spaces through the thoughtful use of color, graphics, planting, and gathering areas. A carefully considered site layout and modular prefabricated Pallet shelters balanced operational efficiency with resident wellbeing, demonstrating that even emergency housing can foster dignity, identity, and a genuine sense of community.
